Five common airline refund fights, one DOT-cited letter.

01

Delayed flights

Generally not a refund right on its own, but domestic 3+ hour or international 6+ hour delays trigger entitlement; meals + rebooking owed either way.

Cite 14 CFR § 260.6 + airline Customer Service Plan.

02

Cancelled flights

Cancellation entitles you to an automatic full cash refund to original payment method — no voucher pressure, no expiration games.

Cite 14 CFR § 260.6 + 2024 DOT Air Refund Rule.

03

Lost / damaged baggage

Airlines owe compensation for loss, delay, or damage; for international itineraries this is the Montreal Convention, not goodwill.

Cite 14 CFR Part 235 + DOT baggage rules.

04

Denied-boarding compensation

Involuntary bump due to overbooking triggers up to $1,550 cash on top of your rebooking — voucher substitute is illegal.

Cite 14 CFR Part 250.

05

Refund refusals

Voucher coercion, "non-refundable" redemptions weeks after cancellation, transfer-to-credit-shell tricks — all cite § 260.6 directly.

Cite 14 CFR § 260.6 + 2024 DOT Air Refund Rule.

Frequently asked

Airline refund questions, regulation-cited.

Can the airline force me to take a voucher instead of a cash refund?

No. Under 14 CFR § 260.6 and the 2024 DOT Air Refund Rule, the airline must refund to your original payment method. Vouchers require your written consent.

My flight was delayed 4 hours. Am I owed anything?

A domestic 3+ hour or international 6+ hour delay entitles you to a cash refund. Shorter delays don't trigger a refund, but the airline still owes you meals and rebooking per its Customer Service Plan and 14 CFR Part 259.

The airline won't pay for my delayed baggage. What rule applies?

For domestic flights, DOT baggage rules and the airline's filed tariffs set liability. For international itineraries, the Montreal Convention sets a fixed per-passenger limit and a 21-day clock to file.

What if the airline just ignores my letter?

After the airline refusal, the next tier is DOT's Aviation Consumer Protection Division at airconsumer.dot.gov, then your state Attorney General consumer office, then small-claims court. We track escalation through each tier until resolution.
